PE fundraising heats up as Canadian sponsors capitalize on domestic momentum

What Moved

CVCA's mid-year fundraising report revealed that Canadian PE sponsors had raised $8.2 billion in H1 2025, a 19% increase over the same period in 2024. The growth was concentrated in mid-market, domestically focused strategies — healthcare services, business services, food and agriculture, and technology. Several established Canadian managers closed their latest vintages above target, while emerging managers with specialized sector expertise also attracted institutional commitments. The common thread: minimal exposure to US trade risk.

Why It Matters

The fundraising data reflected a rational reallocation by Canadian institutional investors. Pension funds and family offices that had historically allocated heavily to US-based PE managers were redirecting capital toward Canadian sponsors as tariff uncertainty raised the risk premium on cross-border strategies. The shift benefited the Canadian PE ecosystem broadly — more capital meant more competitive deal processes, but also more opportunities for co-investment and fund-of-funds structures accessible to HNW investors through exempt-market channels.

Signal to Watch

Whether the domestic fundraising momentum would attract new US and global allocators seeking Canadian exposure, or whether the capital pool would remain predominantly domestic through year-end.
