PE exits surge as sponsors capitalize on elevated public market valuations

What Moved

Canadian private equity exit activity accelerated sharply in the spring. Sponsors pursued IPOs, strategic sales, and secondary buyouts at a pace not seen since 2018. The TMX welcomed a stream of PE-backed listings, particularly in technology and healthcare, while strategic acquirers flush with cash competed aggressively for quality assets. CVCA data indicated that exit values in Q1-Q2 2021 were tracking well above the five-year average, driven by both volume and elevated valuation multiples.

Why It Matters

For LP investors, the exit surge was the payoff for patience through 2020's holding period. Distributions returned capital for redeployment into new vintages — creating a virtuous cycle of fundraising and commitment activity. The risk, however, was that sponsors were timing exits to capitalize on peak valuations rather than optimal operational positioning. Assets sold at cyclical highs set demanding benchmarks that future acquisitions, at similarly elevated entry multiples, would struggle to match.

Signal to Watch

The quality of exit multiples relative to entry multiples would be the definitive performance metric. Sponsors delivering genuine value creation — not just multiple expansion from a rising tide — would distinguish themselves in the vintage year reviews.
